An ornate letter S gilded in imitation silver leaf on a lamp black ground. The source is the ornamental capitals of the Renaissance: formal, structured, and unashamedly decorative.
The plaster is hand-layered on hessian, painted, then distressed back to reveal what lies beneath. Where the silver leaf is worn away, a deep green ground shows through: a hidden layer that only becomes visible through the making of the piece. The edges of the panel expose the raw hessian wrapping around the frame, which is exactly as it should be.
This is the smaller, quieter sibling of the Renaissance S in the Alphabet Series: the same source, the same technique, the same decorative logic, in a format that fits a shelf, a ledge, or a small wall that needs exactly one considered thing on it.
Finished with clear wax. Mounted on a bespoke wooden batten frame.
