DESIGNER AND PAINTER OF DECORATIVE INTERIORS. 

Hand-painted, historically informed, story-led pattern for historic and modern spaces.

From my studio in Hastings on the Sussex coast of England, I design and paint patterns and places ~ drawing history into the present.

I came to decorative interiors from an unconventional direction, reproducing Elizabethan wall paintings and painted cloths in the tradition of the “painter stainers.” That beguiling genre still anchors my practice: I continue to research and reinterpret these rare designs, while my love of surface pattern invites wider, ever-changing influences.

An open, inquisitive approach makes for fruitful collaborations, while my artwork keeps its distinctive signature. Nuanced colour, painterly brushwork and subtle irregularities keep my designs alive and credible. I often finish paintwork with gentle ageing and distressing to distance it from the new and mass-produced, adding what I think of as the patination of time.

I digitise with the lightest touch so the imperfect hand stays ever-present.

In 2007 I received a QEST scholarship to deepen my research into Elizabethan decoration, an association that led to many opportunities, including a ten-metre landscape for the Queen’s summerhouse at Buckingham Palace.

I’ve collaborated on award-winning designs with Lewis & Wood and GP & J Baker, and produced numerous designs for Zoffany, with more on the horizon.

I also work extensively with Kit Kemp/Firmdale, including painting the artwork for her Andrew Martin collection. Clients for bespoke mural wallpapers include Fortnum & Mason, Johnnie Walker, John Smedley Knitwear, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, Retrouvius and several luxury hotels.

In Autumn 2025 I’m Annie Sloan’s Painter in Residence, championing her unique Chalk Paint™ across projects shared on both our platforms.
