Stand Wood is a park landscape with the quality I try to bring to all scenic work: something that reads as atmosphere before it reads as pattern. Deer, stag, and rabbit move through an elegantly aged forest, the brushwork visible throughout, the scene building slowly as the eye travels across the wall.
The brief for the Darnley collection asked for a classic country house landscape, and I approached it from the same place I approach all landscape work: as a world with its own internal logic, where the scale and the painted surface do the work that a photographic print cannot. The sweeping brushstrokes in teals, blues, and warm amber carry the sense of an artwork that has aged into its setting rather than been applied to it.
At 142cm wide with a one-metre straight repeat, it is a design that needs room and an experienced hand to hang. When it is right, it fills a room the way a view fills a window.
Stand Wood is available in three colourways through Zoffany and their global stockists.
