This piece was an inspriation for my award-winning Rococo wallpaper design for Lewis & Wood. I painted Mayoux Madder as a study in the kind of surface that accumulates meaning through its own making. The ground is deep madder-red; the motifs are pale cream, strongly outlined in black. The palette and the geometry come from Indian woodblock printing and the soulful pattern-making of henna work: traditions that treat ornament as serious architecture.
The plaster surface is heavily worked. I built it up in layers over the hessian backing, painted it, then distressed it back to reveal the strata beneath. Shallow cracks run through the surface; in places the pigment rubs back to bare plaster. This is the record of how the piece was made, as deliberate as the motifs themselves.
Finished with a hand-buffed wax that saturates the colours and brings the whole surface together. A unique fresco secco original on hand-layered plaster and hessian, mounted on a bespoke wooden batten frame with wrap-around edges. Signed by me.
Dimensions: 63 × 74 × 4 cm.
