A relaxed letter M, embellished with imitation gold leaf on a burnt orange ground scattered with a blossom garland. The source is the wall paintings at Pompeii: that particular quality of faded brilliance, where the colour has survived but the surface carries every century since it was painted.
I work the Alphabet panels as fresco secco on hand-layered plaster and hessian, then distress the surface by hand to produce the cracked, aged character that gives each letter its warmth. No two are identical. This one has the quality of something found rather than made.
Finished with hand-buffed clear wax. Mounted on a bespoke wooden batten frame with wrap-around edges.
Dimensions: 31 × 31 × 4cm.
