Glimpses of Thyme ~ The Distant Church
“Glimpses of Thyme” is a large scenic design that grew from the late-summer abundance of the Thyme estate in the Cotswolds. Commissioned for the Modern Muralist exhibition (May to Sept ‘26), the work captures the "cultivated abundance" of the location ~ its kitchen gardens, water meadows, and the sculptural forms of ripening produce.
This landscape-format print focuses on the river vista of the mural ~ a view inspired by the River Leach at Southrop. It captures the sense of "threshold" I intended for the composition ~ inviting the eye past the water’s edge and through the trees toward the architectural silhouette of the church in the distance. If you look closely, you can spot an enigmatic stag wandering away down a quiet glade.
The Thyme composition is rooted in the Flemish landscape tradition and the allegorical works of William Blake ~ pieces that coax the eye into the distance through small narrative discoveries. Read more about this project on the Glimpses of Thyme Wallpaper page.
The Process: I hand-painted the original artwork full-scale on paper using layered, distressed techniques and fresco secco influences. By building the image in washes and gently sanding back the surface, I achieved a sense of pentimento and the passage of time. This process was then digitally captured to create both the repeating wallpaper launching in June and this series of four specific Giclée crops.
Your print is produced on Hahnemühle German Etching paper ~ a heavy-duty copperplate paper with a velvety tactile feel and a fine surface texture. This substrate preserves the nuance of the original hand-painted marks and the "faded-and-distressed" patina of the mural.
Printed area: 410mm × 310mm ~ approx. 16.1" x 12.2"
Final print size: 506mm × 406mm ~ approx. 20" x 16" (includes white border)
Fulfilment: Giclée prints ship free within the UK and are drop-shipped via the print lab
