“Glimpses of Thyme” is a large scenic design that grew from the late-summer abundance of the Thyme estate in the Cotswolds. Commissioned for the Modern Muralist exhibition (May to Sept ‘26), the work captures the "cultivated abundance" of the location ~ its kitchen gardens, water meadows, and the sculptural forms of ripening produce.
This portrait-format print focuses on the foreground narrative of the Thyme mural, featuring the estate’s distinctive Cochin hens with their feathery ‘pantaloons’. They are captured foraging at the water’s edge amongst a late-summer tangle of dahlias, zinnias, and nasturtiums. Beyond the bank, the composition opens into a tranquil river vista, where distant figures in rowing boats suggest the slow pace of a Cotswold afternoon
The Thyme composition is rooted in the Flemish landscape tradition and the allegorical works of William Blake ~ pieces that coax the eye into the distance through small narrative discoveries. Read more about this project on the Glimpses of Thyme Wallpaper page.
The Process: I hand-painted the original artwork full-scale on paper using layered, distressed techniques and fresco secco influences. By building the image in washes and gently sanding back the surface, I achieved a sense of pentimento and the passage of time. This process was then digitally captured to create both the repeating wallpaper launching in June and this series of four specific Giclée crops.
Your print is produced on Hahnemühle German Etching paper ~ a heavy-duty copperplate paper with a velvety tactile feel and a fine surface texture. This substrate preserves the nuance of the original hand-painted marks and the "faded-and-distressed" patina of the mural.
